Las Posadas: the litany and the songs, with full lyrics

Las Posadas are the Mexican tradition of the nine nights before Christmas, December 16 to 24. Each night a family welcomes the pilgrims: the Rosary is prayed, the litany is sung in procession with the images of Mary and Joseph, shelter is requested from door to door until one finally opens, and the celebration ends with treats and the piñata. Here are the complete lyrics of everything that is sung, in the order it is used, so you can host a posada at home. The songs are traditionally sung in Spanish; a short English guide accompanies each part.

When it is prayed: From December 16 to 24, one posada each night. The nine nights recall the nine months Mary waited. Each night can be hosted by a different home, or all of them in the same one.

How to pray it

Pray the Holy Rosary, or at least one decade, and say the intention of the night.
Go out in procession with the images of the pilgrims and lit candles, singing the Litany of the Virgin.
In front of the closed door, those outside sing the pilgrims' verses and those inside answer, until the door opens.
Everyone sings 'Entren, santos peregrinos' as the pilgrims come in.
Treats are handed out (candy, peanuts, fruit) and the piñata is broken while singing 'Dale, dale, dale'.
Ponche, tamales or buñuelos, depending on the home.

Can you host a posada with just a few people?

Yes. Split the family into two groups, some outside with the images and some inside, sing the verses and open the door. With small children you can sing only the request for shelter and 'Entren, santos peregrinos'.
